3 Tips for Your First Time DIYing a Screen Room

You've purchased a kit to build a screen enclosure, but you've never constructed anything like this in the past. How much time will it take? What should you be on the lookout for during construction? What kind of unexpected issues could you face? Keep reading for answers and other tips to help you be successful.

Set Aside Some Time

Before beginning construction, unpack the instructions/parts list from your kit. Read the entire thing thoroughly to familiarize yourself with what you're going to be doing. Make sure you've acquired all the necessary tools not included in the kit itself. Many kits will tell you how long the project will take to complete. If you're a first-timer, double their estimate.

If there is no time estimate included in the kit instructions. You can use a construction cost estimator to get the time part of the equation for estimating how much a job would cost if a professional did it. Again, as a DIYer, double or triple the amount of time indicated to be on the safe side.

Clean As You Go

Before you begin, lay out the parts involved in each step of the project along with the tools necessary to complete that step a little way away from the construction area. This will assist in keeping you from tripping over boards, etc. Falls are among the most common accidents in a construction project.

As you complete each step, clear away any debris so that the area where the project is being completed. Again, this is to help avoid trips/falls and also makes it much easier to find the pieces you need for the next step in construction.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected

We've all experienced instructions that weren't the greatest. The internet is a great resource when things go awry. You can also often find a technical support number within the instruction documents that came with your kit as well. Just take a deep breath and relax, the solution is out there. Google it, call a friend who is more experienced with DIY, or, as a last resort, call a professional to finish the job.
